Curriculum - Clinical

Our goal for each student at Gramon is to help him or her develop alternative strategies for coping with frustrations, conflicts, anxieties and angers. Our approach is cognitive/behavioral, founded in the conviction that students can learn to apply greater control over their impulsive behaviors and that they want to learn new behaviors to avoid the repeated failures they had brought upon themselves in the past. Our school social worker, substance abuse counselor, nurse and student support specialists all help students to examine their self-defeating behaviors and to develop new, more productive alternatives.

Clinical services at Gramon include:

A Designated Case Manager whose primary responsibility is to look after the individual student's progress and welfare. The case manager meets regularly with the student, both formally and informally, develops relationships with the student's outside therapist(s) and others involved in the student's overall treatment plan, and takes whatever steps are necessary to ensure that all involved parties are working together on behalf of the student's growth and development.

Weekly Focused Group Counseling that addresses specific topics including anger management, interpersonal relationships and social skills training, self-esteem concerns, self-control, and effective communications. Group counseling allows students to share and relate to the experiences of their peers, and provides an additional forum for problem solving.

Individual Substance Abuse Counseling for students with identified problems and for those who seek out advice and counsel. Highly confidential sessions are structured by the counselor and are conducted as frequently as the counselor deems necessary.

Individual Counseling for students seeking immediate assistance as well as for those students whose teachers believe are in need of immediate support or guidance. These sessions are structured by the counselor and continue as frequently as the counselor feels is necessary.

Student Support Team that is on a standby basis throughout the day to respond to unanticipated problems students might be experiencing. The student support worker intervenes when a student needs assistance and helps the student calm down and become more able to focus upon his or her lessons.

Community agencies are frequently contacted on behalf of students. These agencies include clinics and day treatment programs, after school programs, human services agencies, and probation offices.
